Since we're talking about laying eggs. I've bought 2 Barred Rock hens a week ago, they are around 9 months old. One of them gives me an egg almost everyday since I got her, but the second one (which is considerably smaller then the first) has not laid an egg yet. The lady we bought the chickens from had so many she didn't know who was laying. I'm thinking maybe it's the stress from the move...but would it be possible that the second hen hasn't started laying yet? Do some hens not lay eggs at all? I've heard her do a little egg song, got all excited...just to realize it was false hope. Could it be that she's pumping herself up to start laying? Or a cheerleader for her sister, lol?

It's quite possible that it is the stress from moving. My 2yo hens took three weeks to settle in before they started laying daily.

I bet it is the stress, my BPR give me an egg daily, sometimes 2 (yes I know a lot say it is not possible, but there is no question they are hers), but if the weather suddenly changes, she stops laying for 2 day, then starts up again, and that is just the weather, I am sure a move and new environment would make it last even longer. Althought the comb seems a little big, still looks like a pullet to me! How old?

It is 6 weeks. I did not get a good picture of the wattles but they are red and some what big aswell.

from what I've read or seen or hearif it has wattles and they're good and red it's a roo. but again I'm no expert

Looks just like my sweet little Astrid, which is a Pullet.

Depends on if it's truly a pure BR or BR cross. I've noticed some people posting pics of crossbred birds who look vaguely like BRs that are plainly cockerels and are told they are pullets because it's assumed they are straight BRs and because they are dark. Cockerels can be dark if they are a cross (and sometimes when they aren't; have had one of those, too)

I cannot tell you that is a pullet from that picture since it's at an angle where I can't tell how light or dark it truly is. Seems to me it has an awfully large and pink comb for its age, but I reserve judgement until another picture.

You must say how old these birds are when you ask for sexing help. That makes a difference. Really, sexing posts should go under "What Breed or Gender?".


Case in point here. These chicks on the left are about 4 weeks old and most would say they are BR pullets. Nope. They are Silver Phoenix x BR cross cockerels, accidental mating. They even had dark leg fronts.
