I was a math major 20 years ago and I got tired of counting the number of weeks for RIR's age, Sex links age and BR age. Each breed was a different age.Now if I want to know, I just open up my spread sheet

Hello,
I recently purchased a Barred Plymouth Rock hen at the fair. I did have one of the judges look at her and I got her OK. But, I have some questions about the breed in general. First off, what causes very pale combs? The bird is healthy but she has a super pale comb, almost white. I did ask someone and they said that it could be caused by lack of sun. Is that true? Also, how many points on the comb should a BPR have?

Thank you.

I think it is the sun for sure. At the show, there were hens that were very pale and I know the breeder personally, and he does not have outdoor runs for them.

It is usually lack of direct sun, but without seeing them I wouldn't know for sure. Since this was a fair I have to ask. Was this woman a licensed judge? Judges do not have to be particularly knowledgeable to judge a fair nor do they need a judges lic. there are only 5-6 women judges in the US with a lic. Three of them here in Cali.

Hi CG. Thank you for the Excel formula. This will be useful whenever I start to keep records of my spprs. My first step is to leg band my pullets.

I plan to use plastic binding combs, cut into short pieces for leg bands. There is space to write numbers on each small piece. If this works, I ll take a picture.
