Plymouth Rock thread!

Are those zip ties for ID's? What a good idea...how do you know how big to make them when they are chicks? Do you just keep cutting them off as they get bigger?

Yes the zip ties make a quick and easy way to identify each chick for record keeping. I get the weight of each chick weekly. As I am doing this, I check to see if the tie is ok. If not, I replace it with another tie. When they reach maturity I will replace the tie with a proper leg band.

SILVER ROCK-- those SPR are growing up fast---lots of feathering for just 10 weeks on a Rock at least... these do not appear to be like the GSBR's that have the slow feathering gene (to make those bars nice and clear)... penciling is looking good...however, I do not know alot about this pattern in particular...

Are you planning on selecting for mostly type and/or size this go round?
I will be breeding for type and size until I get them to the Standard type and size. Then I will use the double mating system to get the best male & female color patterns.

Fred,

The Maine line, sexable at hatch: Yes or no?

I have one hatched 3 freaking days early. Never has that ever happened to me, and I've hatched weekly for a year straight.. save two months in the winter.

I have other breeds in this hatch: all are less developed. When I first put them in I candled at day 2 and it was clear as day they were developing. Strong, strong embryos. Out of 33 all but 12 are internally pipped. The 12 left have smaller air cells but are still alive. Probably will hatch on time rather than this early.. One out, 5 external pips in the incubator.

First out is not dry yet, but I'd like to attempt sexing by down colour, head spot, and leg colour at hatch and mark them. See if it is possible for the future. Just thought I'd ask you if in your experience with this line that they were.

:)
