Yup. A New Year's chick must eat to stay warm. A Fire Cracker chick has to deal with heat. Most breeders I know pen up in December and break up in May or earlier, for this and other reasons.
My rule has been to begin hatching then too, but most folks don't want chicks til later and by then they're not chicks anymore. What's going on now is broody hens everywhere. Few chicks but they are a pain.
I'm not set up for Breeding pens, but have five coops of five different breeds. BR's, CR's, BM's, EE's and Dels.
