Plymouth Rock thread!

Bob gets folks a little confused with some of his advice on crossing and bringing in new blood (this is a Red thing) as I've said before and gotten good ataboys from it too. IF its not there you have to go out and get it. Like breeds like everytime
There are a few breeders our there who have been backed into a corner, so to speak. While I am of the opinion that it's best not to cross...if at all possible....sometimes, there is not choice, unfortunately.

yes but one trick here is to not contaminate the whole flock with the effort as then you have nothing to fall back on for sure but test breeding and trying something different is not uncommon in any type breeding something has to give to get improvement most of the time.

he can contradict this too as now he is in pursuit of crossing RCreds with Mohawks. Taboo or no?

I think the best way to improve is often with out crosses, but you do have to know what you're doing. The reason so many say not to outcross is because some of the lines have traits set so strongly even the newest, worst breeder on the planet couldn't screw them up (it happens anyway but not as often). So it's easier for a newcomer.

I wouldn't want to outcross every year (unless the breed was in a really bad place and I had a LOT to fix), but it shouldn't be some weird taboo thing either.

I do appreciate what you're saying, but you don't know my story. I won't bore you with it, but suffice to say, I don't have a whole lot of "purebred" options. I've been looking for 7+ years for another line of SPR to improve my flock and haven't found - until just this year - a line that will improve what I've got already. And...I sure don't wish to take a step backward.

Yup, yup! Agree.

If this was in reply to me, the eggs have already been tossed, the fertile ones (about half) were all blood ring at 7 days after candling. Probably due to heat, but I don't know how you screw up shipping so bad that it takes 4 days to get from CA to WA.

I appreciate the referrals but probably am going to sell my SPPR to make room in the pens.
we recently had eggs that got shipped to Puerto Rico then back to us 8 days. Needless to say they didn't make it.

I had some shipped to Hawaii last year and then back - 7 days. A few hatched, shockingly. Poor eggs. I think the post office is so overworked these days, with closing so many offices and centralizing more. Sigh. Sure makes the job of getting god-quality hatching eggs out there more difficult.

Please reconsider! We NEED good SPPR breeders out there!
We are just starting and really love ours I have a older pair well not that old only 2 year on the hen and a little over a year on the Rooster. We have now acquired birds from Die Fly that are showing promise and are at the POL. So we are super excited to be working with them. I plan on running to or three breeding pens.
