Plymouth Rock thread!

There hasn't been much activity on the Plymouth Rock thread lately so I will post a couple pictures of my Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks to hopefully get things rolling again. :)

I know! I have now been watching the breeders thread, since there has been nothing going on here. Things move a lot faster over there. And as always you have got yourself some beautiful SPPRs!

Hi CCCCCHICKENS, I to am guilty of following the Plymouth Rock breeders crowd here lately. :) Thank you very much for the nice words on my birds. :)

They really are lovely, Silver Rock ;)

I put some blue Plymouth Rock eggs in the incubator last Thursday. I'm specifically looking for a rooster out of this combination.

Hi BlackPanther, I hope you get a nice number of Blue Plymouth chicks to hatch. :) Around this time next week I should have some chicks also and thank you very much for the nice words on my birds. :)

Oh, that was kinda a random thing!

I started out and the Java sounded exactly like what I wanted. I spent a lot of time searching, a lot of effort, a lot of phone calls...

I did not find any in my price range.
Maybe I'm a cheapskate, but I don't pay $4-6 dollars for a straight-run day-old chick that I'm just going to throw in my backyard.
(Well, it's a little more elegant than that, but you get the picture)
I suppose I could have gotten Mottleds from Ideal Poultry, but I like to term hatchery birds "welfare chickens."

So then I started looking at breeds I could tolerate that were available. Something single-combed, clean-legged, large fowl, dual-purpose, and occasionally broody.
I figured on the Orpington or the Plymouth Rock. The Orpingtons, in my experience, were not hardy, so I was hesitant to go with them.
Calling about, one phone call linked to another and eventually I came up with a guy that had some blue Plymouth Rock chickens he was willing to sell. "Hey," I thought. "Blue. That sounds interesting." I took a drive and bought them. They turned out to be roosters. But by that time, I was hooked on the color.
So now I have a flock of them.

They're pretty variable and everything, some of them are even barred, but this year I'm going to start trying to breed to the Standard. Now I just need to get a current SOP.
roll.png
I'm running off a Plymouth Rock breed standard from 1919 and full SOPs from 1898 to 1912 because I can get them for free. Not the brightest, hmm?

LOL, now you've got me rambling. People don't like it when I ramble

I don't think the standard has changed. That almost takes an act of congress to do that. My guess is your birds came from the same source mine did originally. She was in Lebanon and got them from Halo. I know she sold them to lots of people in TN. Mine were hiding barring too.... very hard to see on splash. Very subtle on blues when I got them. If you need some new blood down the road let me know. I should have some laying by Fall. these are better quality than what I had originally. Mostly I have black pullets for some reason.... I think 4 to 1 so far..... strange. I am keeping a couple of splash single barred cockerels too as back ups.

Lots of rock activity at our place lately. Bred the three SPR hens to the roo that did not have a side sprig. Then collected eggs for a few days and all 7 have veining. Gave the two roo's to a friend who processed them. BTW she said they were delicious and I should open a chicken farm

but it was a terrible experience killing them and she never do it again. I couldn't do they had names. But they were both not show quality and started fighting. Wish I could have put her off a few weeks to make sure the eggs hatch.

so far it is day 9 and I candled them again and they are progressing well. In the bantam coop the BT BR was sneaky and sat on eggs for week before my daughter told me so guess what we have---4 BR crossed with BT SL polish. Oh well my kids love them and that's all that matters! The best part is she is quite an amazing little mother so I know who my broody is.
