This is Maude, she's almost 10 wks.... I'm new to this and have read through some of this thread... So you think another 10 weeks on laying? She has more red and has a bigger comb than my others....

Also she is hatchery quality I know, but her legs are dark.. Yellow underneath and in her webs... Will her front part change to yellow or stay dark?

Hi All!
New to the site, new to chicken raising and currently lurking in a few spots! Mid-May I plan on picking up 4-5 Barred Rock chicks. Very excited and looking forward to this! Coop is on its way to being built; site dug, footers in, floor built. I can tell you all love this breed, so it makes me feel so much better that I, too, picked it! Questions: Would love input! Anything special I should know about the breed that would help me raise friendly, healthy chickens? Other than the standard information I have researched, that is. Also, they will be limited a bit as to free-ranging due to where I live. Have any of you noticed more aggressive behaviors I need to know about with more run time vs. free range time?? Believe me, I will be letting them out as much as I can, but I am also being honest and realistic. Thanks for the help!!

Our two barred rocks were the most inquisitive and friendly chicks, we kept the six inside first four weeks and handled them alot making daily washable towel forts in the living room (poop all the time)! They are still the most social with us but now that they are six months old, they are less aggressive of the group. Our free range time is also limited to when we are home but they love to be free! Wait at run door when they see us coming! Interesting, the two rocks stick together alot, as do my two buffs! Being cooped up (litterally) over the winter, they were all getting bored and picking on each other a bit, used a flock block to distract them which was a godsend. Like all kids, the more exercise and diversity (i.e. bug and worm hunting) during the day makes for happy chicks! Good luck!

PS ...Big fan of the automatic chicken door lets them out at least into the run at sunup and locks them in sunset if you aren't home!
