Plymouth Rock thread!

Lots of rock activity at our place lately. Bred the three SPR hens to the roo that did not have a side sprig. Then collected eggs for a few days and all 7 have veining. Gave the two roo's to a friend who processed them. BTW she said they were delicious and I should open a chicken farm :lau but it was a terrible experience killing them and she never do it again. I couldn't do they had names. But they were both not show quality and started fighting. Wish I could have put her off a few weeks to make sure the eggs hatch. :fl so far it is day 9 and I candled them again and they are progressing well. In the bantam coop the BT BR was sneaky and sat on eggs for week before my daughter told me so guess what we have---4 BR crossed with BT SL polish. Oh well my kids love them and that's all that matters! The best part is she is quite an amazing little mother so I know who my broody is.

Hi 4Hgirl, happy to hear that the 7 Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock eggs are doing well and hope you have a nice hatch. Look forward to seeing pictures. :)

I have waaayyy too much cuteness going on in my house right now! Got 3 of these ladies and 2 Buff Orpingtons.

Sweet, sweet little things! And already growing fast in the 2 days I've had them!:)

Before you know it you will want more. I started out with 6 and have had as many as around 400 more or less. Good luck and have fun...

Ok, here goes. I am getting prepared to start experimenting with my rocks to see what colors I can get out of them. I have a White Rock cockerel and pullet, three Barred Rock hens, one Partridge Rock hen and two Silver Penciled Rock pullets. If I bred my White Rock to all of these hens what colors could I create? I'm just curious. I know you have to line breed to get rid of unwanted colors. So, I would like to know what I could come up with. Any tips?

It depends..... more than likely, you will get all white chicks with a few black feathers. That is assuming the white rock is double white gene. Only way to know is to test breed....

Are white rock dom white or recessive white? If they are dom white yes you will get o100% white chicks with spots. If they are recessive WHO KNOWS. The white birds can hide all kinds of stuff, barring, blue, black...... anything could be under there. Most people don't want to cross whites with other colors because of the UNKNOWN. Your barred rock hens should make you sex linked cockerels, unless they are barred under the white.

If you just want to SEE what you get that would be ok, but I think you would have an uphill battle getting something usable out of them. The partridge and penciled rocks patterns will not show the first cross.
