If you're seeing black, then it's a girl. Give it another week and I bet you start to see the white barring with the black.

This is good, because I ordered pullets! It was a pullet surprise, though, so I don't really know if this is a BR .. I'll keep looking for the white barring though! thanks again!

Yard full o' rocks :

Got some new pix before it got too *&%$ hot out today (it just hit 101F here) of the BRs I have growing up. 2 of the cockerels are 4 months old 8/1, all the remaining are 11 weeks old

Got a question for you experts: Did your White Rocks have a bluish-gray look to them when they hatched out? These I've got were really very deep bluish-gray especially the pullets.

Anyone?

Anyone?

I hatched 10 SQ white rocks in mid May...all of mine hatched a "buff yellow" color and eventually became all white

Blue/gray doesn't sound right at all. SOP calls for "white" birds to WHITE in all areas...no mention of bluish-gray

Sorry

Pix might help

I know it was early to cull for the girls, but they didn't have any noticeable penciling at all and the other three do. That will probably change a little, but I'd like them to hatch out with the pattern from the start.

Don't have any pics right now. They grdually losted the blusih-gray look and are fully white now. I wass told that the bluer-gray they are when hatched the more pure they are.

Sorry to say, but you're getting into the wrong breed if you're expecting patterns so early on. It just doens't happen with silver penciled rocks - sorry.

Lol. The pattern came out on three of them from the start. Nice penciling. The other two had solid white chests with very very minimal black splotches. Probably came from different hens. I'll find pictures this weekend of the differences and you'll see. If it came out from the start on three it can be done from the beginning.

Here's the other rooster behind a curious ameraucana. Lol. Still some white but not as much. He's the one with the bigger tail.

I had a girl hatch with more white on her chest. She's 18 weeks old and the penciling is starting to come in. Who knows, she may turn out to have the best penciling when she's mature.

IMO there's so many other things to "cull" (as in remove from the flock) for than whether the penciling showed up right away or not.
