The new thoughts on the double mating system are it is NOT nessasry to get good birds of each sex. There is a talk about this one the rock club forums. I know in the Partridge breeding it was told red breasted males for best females. But now you can not easily find them since black breasted is the correct color for the males. So on that not I would only keep the best that match the SOP and get rid of the rest after first year.

I have the last SOP I let somebody borrow my red one and I don't think the standard has changed for partridge....my roos have good color and the hens that hatched out with them are very well laced I think the difficult part is the deep reddish bay sometimes they get lighter in some lines. I've read that for Silver Penciled you need to keep muddy backed hens for the better roos but I don't know that for a fact. My PR's are all young 6 months and look green, black and burgundy red to me with lacing and when I pull feathers they are laced correctly...

Just hatched 4 beautiful fluff balls from Wynette - silver penciled plymouth rocks 1-2 days old

One had splayed/spraddle leg, but is doing great today !! 2 are very chubby, almost as chubby as the english orps I hatched with them

Did your son get to see any hatch??

They're awfully cute!!!!

ETA: Lotsapaints - they do go through quite an ugly stage, but hang in there! One day, you'll go look at them & your mouth will drop open, they're so darn pretty!
