Plymouth Rock thread!

I wanted to give you an ovation, but seems I can't.

I had it turned off; I personally don't want folks to judge me based on ovations. Just my own personal preference!

Thanks for the thumbs-up, though, and for your comments - I feel like if ONE person gets somethign good out of a personal opinion, it's worth the effort!!

My husband purchased un-medicated Layer Ration with 16% protein and 3.50% calcium. Thank you for the good advice, I will store it for the future! Flock raiser and Oyster Shell on the side, sounds yummy!
I am planning on putting a raised bed in the pen off of my coop for greens, we will see how THAT works

Thanks again!

You don't need to store it. In fact, you cannot store feed for long periods without depleting its nutritional value so just go ahead and feed it to them, even if you mix it with the Flock Raiser. I feed my birds Tucker Milling mini layer pellets which are 16% protein, but they contain good porcine animal protein, unlike many feeds today. The trend toward vegetarian feeds led to feather picking and other issues and wasn't a natural feed, especially with penned flocks without access to good green forage and lots of bugs, lizards, etc. Tucker Milling also makes a 22% layer pellet, which I sometimes use in a period if I have numerous heavily molting hens at one time.

And all layer feeds are non medicated, for good reason. If there is a medicated layer feed, I sure don't know about it nor would I ever feed it to mine.

I use tickets chick starter till they start laying and then they go over to the 22%. I don't free range so I like the higher protein. LOVE that they use pork. I didn't know they had a 16% you don't see that here. I have see the 15% free range feed I have mixed it with the 22% once just cuz it was a broken bag.

I have noticed this year I have only had one case of feather picking and I am over run with chicks......maybe have 300-400 right now. it maybe the meat based feed. this is my first year using it for everyone. last spring I used soy based feed.....lots of feather picking with fewer birds.

sorry my phone changed it Tucker's starter. it is a brand out of GA I think. may not be able to get it all over the country. it is really good quality feed.

I've never heard of Tucker, either. Interesting! I'll look it up, just out of curiosity. (I'm a bit of a feed fanatic!)

ETA, looks like they're from TN - of course, it's not available in my area, darnit anyway, because THIS stuff, assuming it has meat protein, would be the nuts!
