Plymouth Rock thread!

I'm really enjoying my new BR, Frances. I'm also enjoying my RIRs. So what is it about the Rock breeds that everyone loves so much? Why do you guys pick these guys? I'd love to know what it is about them that draws you to them.

I picked the Plymouth Rocks for temperament, hardiness, and availability.

I got my BR's for the look of them, no one close around where I lives has them, so I know "if" they get out I can say they are mine (plus they have coloured leg tags), I also picked them temperament as we have a 4yr old boy who interacts with them & because they did well in the cold.

They are 8 weeks old this coming thursday and I love every single one of my 6 girls. Very sweet, follow me around talking to me, they put up with our son LOL they are just fun all around!

If I were at some time ready, not now, but sometime, should I just get my next BR from the local feed store, or order them from someone on BY Chickens? Has anyone ever done that?

You should get them from me!! Of course!!

Actually, it depends on what you want. Breeder quality Barred Rocks are just so wonderful and true to the breeds barring, personality and vigor. Not a thing wrong with hatchery/feed store birds, but they are often quite "off" from the size, temperament and vigor of a true bred Barred Rock, just saying. I've had both over the years and yes, there is a difference.

I posted some photos about 10 posts back of some birds, showing the difference. All the birds posted are from our flock.
