Plymouth Rock thread!

Matt, you aren't alone in the outcross thought.  Unsure/conflicted as to whether the White is the right way to go.  There is plenty of size in some of the the other varieties.

I've personally never seen a rock come close to the Whites out here for size or type. But would be open to another variety. I know Partridge is a common cross but they struggle with size too. I know folks have used light brahmas to improve Colombian Rocks, just not sure what would take longer to fix color with the Rock cross or Comb and Feathered legs with the Brahma cross.

Edit: but yeah that's my conflict. I know without getting size up I will get toasted by the Whites every time.

Someone plz help!!!! My Barred Plymouth Rock just crowed 2day. It's weird she is a hen, I think? She has no spurs and doesn't crow everyday. Also she hasn't laid eggs. She is a year and 3 months. Is she a hen or a rooster?

That is without a doubt a hen. No explanation for her behavior, but no pointy saddle or hackle feathers, plus a hen's body shape. Definite hen.

Hi all

I posted pics of my silver pencilled plymouth rocks today on the PR Breeding Thread. As you can see they are just chickens, nothing to get too excited about, but they are pleasing to me, so I'll continue to raise them.

Wynette (in Michigan, US) and Aoxa (in New Brunswick, Canada) who are both familiar to this website, and another women in Ontario (who got the first shipment from me this spring) now have breeding stock from this line, so hopefully the genetics will be spread around a bit. Thank you very much ladies for your kind comments about my chickens. If the person in British Columbia wants to try a shipment of eggs next spring, please let me know, I hope you understand that Prince Edward Island is closer to England than to the west coast of N. America, so shipping eggs that far is not a great idea, and getting them across the US border entails a lot of red tape, not to mention shipping expense.

If I can get good pics of my cockerels in a month or so, I will post and ask your opinions on which one I should keep.

Bye for now.

What can anyone tell me about the Blue Barred rocks?

I traded a pullet for what was supposed to be two cockerels but they're both pullets. Would it hurt to cross them into my blacks.

I have only the one black roo and he's not good at breeding. Long story. So I traded for the blues thinking I might use one of them.

Again these are Kathy's line. I did see him on a SLW the other day, so I know he can dance. I just need him to dance with his own kind.

hahaha, that's funny! My Barred Rock was a Cockerel and he had very very light color almost a grey compated to his sister Hen, she was prominently black/white...he was more silver/grey and white..he started to Crow at about 4 months and he got longer legs and he really looked like a Rooster and was much bigger than the hen at 4 months. Strutted around and very nosey and bossy...My 14yr old EE crows when she's mad I haven't let her out of her pen. So, I don't know but it looks like a Hen..:)

In regards to the smutty overcast on the hens of the Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks. In my opinion this can be breed out or at least brought down considerably. The most obvious is to cull cockerels that have the rusty shoulders. This must be done early as it will be covered up but will once again be seen in his male & female offspring. Then as they mature look at the wing bar, tail & breast of the cockerel. The black feathers will have a green or a purple sheen. Green is good keep these for the breeding pens. Purple is bad cull these as a purple sheen is the sign of red bleeding through black and will be passed down to his male & female offspring. But I must say this is something we must do in the future as size is a issue in the Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks of today and that must be fixed first. Our first goal should be #1 to get a good number of breeding hens in our breeding pens to at least the Standard weight of 7 1/2 lbs. This is just my opinion so take it for what it is just my opinion. :)

ps : We fight the SPPR will only suffer. We work together we may have something that can compete with the Barred & Whites in the future. :)
