Do you have just the one male? That's crazy odd on the rumpless issue. Of the myriad of issues that the SPR in general are plagued with, this is a new one to me! Don't count those pullets out just yet; though they lack that nice, flat back we like to see in the older juveniles and adults, they are clearly "on alert" in the pic. That nice tail life may come later. I know with my line, it's a full 20 weeks before I even begin to see that females' tails really start to show me where they are headed, and that is quite early.

I find my 16 week old SPPR are slow in the tail department as well. Actually I think this picture is 2 weeks old, so he'd be 15 weeks.. but still the girls are quite developed where the boys are just, not.

It's just the one cockerel yeah (I PM-ed you about getting one, but bird acquisitions are on hold for the time being). Hatched a quad out of 6 eggs so felt pretty lucky. They are small, and breeder acknowledges problem in line, but the lack of cushion is really nice. If I end up keeping the two well marked pullets through winter I'll find a cockerel in the spring. Not too worried about tails, they're growing and young as you mention. The pullet in profile I like especially, her sibling on the right in these pictures looks like she'll have a nicer front end when mature. The third one has smutty lacing and will be going to auction with the male on thursday. The two nicer pullets will be shown this fall and go to the layer pen for the time being.

Edit: Just realized I missed this page. My cockerel is actually rumpless, as in no tail nub, not even a hint of tail. Not sure if it was a development issue in incubator or genetic, but since he was only chick in hatch (the other rocks and a dozen Langshans) that had any sort of oddity, I feel safe thinking it's a genetic thing.

Will be neat to watch them mature! Watch that topline; as you say, you're a huge step up having no cushions in the females. It's seriously a huge problem with the SPR.

Matt, those pullets have no cushion at all. There's some real potential there. I hope you find a way forward with them as judging from what we can see, they are quite handsome.

YUP......I'll have to go by the local grocery store if/when the forecast calls for "any type of winter weather" and I'll get you guys that deal with it all the time some funny pix.....folks here truly freak out.  I've seen nasty weather here last over a week only twice in my lifetime.....an ice storm back in either '73 or '74 and the blizzard of '93 (I think)....and for here that was bad, I had 17" of snow at my house in about 6 hrs

Other than that, it's normally gone in a day, maybe 2....people act like they'll be home bound for the rest of the winter, it cracks me up

Lol that's how all the new Floridians act for just a little hurricane! They buy out all the bottled water in every store. We are getting a hurricane, as if we won't be able to find water?!!! Bahahaha

Wynette if you look in your American Standard of Perfection you will clearly see that Yellow is preferred but Dusky Yellow will also be seen. Under Disqualification you will also see "Shanks and toes other than Yellow or Dusky Yellow.", not just Yellow. In my opinion anyone breeding poultry would benefit greatly by having and using the American Standard of Perfection.

Thank you all for explaining that to me. I'm certain the legs are yellow with the dusky color in the front. I will make time soon to take pics and post for everyone's review. We do not have a SOP book as I am not trying to be a breeder. I have made copies of a friends of the breeds we have. Just trying to get my child a few nice birds she can show at small 4H level to help her self esteem and learn care taking skills. I was more worried there is something wrong with the hens. Glad I now know what dusky yellow means.

Are white rocks welcome here? I bought a cockerel on Saturday and I couldn't be happier with him. I normally don't mess with my roosters much. maybe a pet here and pick them up to check them over for anything that could possible be wrong with them. Well I do occasionaly hold my OEGB roosters, they are really sweet. Anyways, this guy is so calm. I think he looks beautiful. I have never owned any rocks before. He is for SQ stock. I paid $35 for him, most I have ever paid for a single rooster, but he was well worth it in my eyes. I am considering showing him. Like I said he is from SQ stock, but with not having experience with the breed, I cant say much. As far as I can tell he looks good, pretty good feather quality, filling out decent. I haven't weighed him but I am guessing he is somewhere between 9-13 lbs. How much are they suppose to way? I have yet to buy the SOP, which has been on my list for who knows how long, but every time I gather $60 i find chickens to spend it on, lol. If I can ever get a decent picture of him, I will post a picture of him.
