Plymouth Rock thread!

This is my only SPR and I am trying to get more from Mr.Horstman. Please everyone tell me what you think. I am new to grading chickens. She is 19 weeks old. We had eagles in the area so they could not come out i had to hold her for pictures.

Pullet in the middle - nice head yes? Freakishly large? Lol. They are still with their foster mother - 12 weeks old now.

There is no perfect bird, of course. The bird on the left has nice features. The bird in the middle does indeed have the larger, wider head, which is preferred. Getting ALL the little features in one package? The task of a life time.

Do any of the other varieties of rocks (besides Barred) have the little signs of gender as young chicks (like the more distinct head spot and dark leg was on Barred rock pullets). I know even with the Barred it's not 100% - just wondering if any of the other varieties have these little things that allow an educated guess?

Hello Rainy Day
You have a lovely sppr pullet with the most yellow legs that I have seen so far on female spprs. She will grow more beautiful with each passing month. I wish you luck and hope you can get a few more spprs to breed.

Where is Port Orchard? On PEI, I see eagles every week now. They are certainly making a comeback in eastern Canada!

PEI Chicken

Thank you PEI for the nice comments. The great city of Port Orchard is in Washington State. It is on the western side of Puget Sound across from Seattle. It is also where the show Cedar Cove is about.

SR, that would be great, to be able to see them side by side.

One thing I have noticed different from my line in comparing them to PEI's line - the PEI pullets seem to have more black on the head than my line does - they all have it.  All but one that I have still have one more juvie molt to go through, so I am closely watching to see if these black feathers will be molted out.  So interesting.

Hi Wynette
I was looking at some pictures that PEI chicken's posted a few weeks ago of her SPPRs and I think your PEI pullets will have the silvery gray head by final molt. If possible can you post a few pictures of both lines so we all can see the differences between the two.

Hi RainyDayChicken I agree with PEI as you do have a nice SPPR pullet that will improve over the next few months. :)
