You have a very nice strain of Columbian Bantams. Whos strain are they? Are they from Calif? Look forward to your next message. The male has a very nice natural sweep in his tail. Many rock bantams are getting backs like a wyandotte and some are pushing the limit to a Langshang. BOB

If the old saying type comes from your female and color from your male then the female shape is so important. I had to inbreed my best male black spurs to his daughters for three years to get females that had correct R I Red type. A few top bantam breeders tell me the big problem is bantam breeders breed the lenth of backs right off of thier bantams. I dont know why they do this. I have a strain of white rock bantams that are lean, long and super typey. It took eight years to do this. They where not like this when I got them. They where chunky looking birds with poor combs. It took 20 years to get my large fowl white rocks to get a sweaping top line. I almost went over board and got a Rhode Island Red top line in lowering the males backs. Their tails are more fully furnished. We crossed a male three years old that I sent to Penn a few years ago back onto my old hens and got two males with just about correct standard top lines. They have good lenth of body and hope to hatch about 60 chicks this year.

Be patient with your bantams it takes time to get the type the way you want it. bob

YEA!!! Got my 1st Silver Pencil Plymouth Rock (they came from Wynette) egg today!!

Hatch date was May 20th. And the first egg was 49 gms.

I'm new to chickens, but am very surprised that chickens are laying in the middle of winter. There was a wind chill of 10 deg today. I assumed chickens only laid eggs in the early spring/spring and summer.
