Plymouth Rock thread!

Thanks,
that helps since I don't rember how big the eggs were that wynette sent. Lol

can you explain the difference in the combs? Is it a difference in food? The two small comb girls hatched at the same time as the large comb girls.

Yard full o' rocks :

Ok......its Day 7 and I just candled all my Col Rock eggs. EVERY one (10) from the Ohio bred flock is fertile and growing well. I have 3 of 10 that I set from my birds that came from Canada that are fertile. Guess it took the 'ol boy a little while to figure things out.

I'll be setting add't eggs hopefully Sat or Sun from the Canadian pen, once I have enough collected.

I'm glad to hear it, Scott! Great news! I can hardly wait to hear that you have a "yard full o' rocks!"

On another note ..... I candled my BR eggs, too. Zero, zip, zilch, nada ..... not one fertile. I have my biggest BR boy in with the New Hampshire girls, and YAY .... those eggs are fertile! As soon as I have enough of those eggs, I will return him to the BR pen, and return the NH boys with their girls. Gettin' there .....

The comb thing is simply genetics. I have 6 Col Rocks from the same breeder in Ohio. 2 have VERY small combs, the others are considerably larger

I doubt food has anything to do with it

I have heard that birds in the South (where I am) tend to have large combs than those in the north as this is the way in which they dissipate heat....not sure if thats true or not

Those two are south of Atlanta and I'm north so I think we're back to genetics.

Yes Wynette. I sold the two with a lot of white and broken penciling. Those two also had the small combs.

Hey, Hennypen! That's very interesting about your hens with the broken penciling; no one has ever indicated that my line is throwing this - I'll watch for it, and see if it's due to a specific hen. Thanks for posting!
