Plymouth Rock thread!

This is my BR girl, Periwinkle, not the best quality since she came from a feed store but she's a good layer and a sweet girl.

Quality can be measured many ways! If she is a good layer and a sweet bird, then she is a quality bird. A lot of people would prefer her to a show bird that meets the SOP, but does not lay very well and has zero personality! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy your chicken!! .....stan

Yes I agree, just wanted people to know I'm aware she isn't show quality since people seem to love telling me that. She was my first one to start laying and lays an egg every day.

It was a couple of hatchery BR hens that made me love them so much in the first place! I recently lost them both at the age of 5. There's not a thing wrong with your sweet girl. I agree with Stan. I've had both types, breeder/show quality and hatchery stock, and love them both, but Barred Rocks are just great birds, period.

Here are my dear departed first BR hens, Ivy and Lexie. I still have Lexie's son, Zane, and Ivy's daughter, Fern, and Fern's daughter, Barbara (Fern and Barbara were both sired by one of Lexie's other sons, Dutch):

I totally agree with you all. I have hatchery and SOP birds, and though the SOP's are more beautiful they have half the personality of the hatchery. I think speckledhen has it right, Chickens are a hobby not a religion. Very nice BR by the way.

Very true! However, just because a bird is show quality doesn't mean it won't lay well or have personality. I know that is probably not what you meant.

I have both show birds and "backyard" ones. I tend to get a lot more attached to the backyard types, I guess because I know they are staying around for life. I have a hatchery Barred Rock hen that is pushing 5 years old. She still lays an egg almost every day! She's quality in my book.
