Police!!!

Had a call recently for a man running a cockerel fighting ring in his back yard. When I showed up, he had chickens (illegal unless you own 3 acres or more) and only a half acre. Only problem with the whole cockerel fighting thing was he had only 4 buff hens and a mutt hen (EE) he said just showed up one day. I asked if he had any cockerels and he said that he did not and wouldn't because of the noise.

I informed him he needed more than 3 acres to have hens and he said he did not know. I told him that not to buy anymore birds. When these died, not to get any more. He said he understood and thanked me. He asked if I knew how old hen chickens lived to be and I told him 30 to 40 years and winked.

Now if code enforcement goes out there, things might be different but as for me, I think I handled it nicely.

That's funny about the snow on their backs. Did you explain that the reason they have that snow on their backs is because they have 2 layers of hair and they don't loose enough body heat to melt it? My mother was shocked we didn't have a barn for our horses. I asked her what she thought wild horses did. She figured they lived in caves or something.

Yes, and I also explained that I had a B.S. in Equine Studies and had owned horses for over 10 years at the time. I had a statewide horse rescue director on my side (said that was a strange thing for him, usually he's taking peoples horses!), people from my college, the local Humane Society director, my vet, farrier, etc. They all called and talked to him, did no good. He had something to prove. Too bad it didn't work

And where were my horses when there was a bad storm or blizzard? Standing outside, wouldn't come in for anything!

I had animal controls how up for my horses once and only once

we had an old almost 30 year old mare. she was sickly and we couldn't keep weight on her. her favorite past time was standing along the fence by the road for everyone to see. and this woman would pass by every day and would call the animal control, worried we were starving it.

So the officer shows up, and was surprised at how understanding we were. we thanked him for showing up, showed him the other horses, who were a bit over weight, showed him the vet records, and the strict feeding regimen with lots of fats, rofage and extra vitamins for the old horse to try and get weight on her. the office said all he had to do was look at the other horses, and th hay we had in the pasture and could tell we weren't starving the horses and it was obvious the mare was just old.

we eve offered to let the concerned lady to come by, meet the horses , and so on so we could put her mind at ease.

the officer say usually his visits are met with anger, people are offended and demand he leaves, so it made him happy we were so open. but we had nothing to hide, and we rather the officer be called and he not be needed then to let some poor abused animal be starved to death because no one does anything.

after that when ever we needed anything (we did wildlife rescue at the time) the officer and his group was very helpful, while anyone else in our rehab group had to jump through hoops to get help.

he retired a couple of years ago. i miss him! he was a heck of an officer. Don't blame him though. he's a great grand father and moved to a house on a lake somewhere. I hope he has fun where ever he is.

Absolutely agree!!

I never even saw this officer in person. He came when we weren't home and would drive by the house slowly. I talked to him on the phone and set up an appointment for him to come see the horses, their shelter, food, etc and he never showed. "Chicken" if you ask me, he knew we were doing nothing wrong.

Ditto. We had a code enforcer here that hated my in-laws, and well, uh, I have that same last name too. He was making up stuff to cite them with. For example I have a hard paper copy of the nuisance ordinance that clearly states you are allowed to have ONE non-working car in your yard, that is defined by having expired tags(among other things) ---- and he tried to give my in-laws a citation for their ONE non-working pickup truck with CURRENT registration tags. It was sitting in the yard because they were saving up for transmission work, which they eventually got it fixed. Point is he was trying to cite them clearly against the actual wording of the ordinance!!

It's the animal control guy that hates me personally. He has a serious attitude problem!

This was cute!! A buddy of mine that had over the amount of chickens he was legally supposed to have. I got a call early Easter morning asking me if I'd take 2 of his hens. He said his neighbor called the SO on him saying they were to loud! Funniest thing was that if he wouldn't have been off he probably would have taken his own complaint call. We work for the SO!!
