My broody silkie; Marshie, recently hatched 2 polish chicks on the 28th. the first chick hatched out with off slate legs, with yellow. the second chick hatched out with yellow legs. im pretty darn sure polish have greenish slate legs as adults.

I can tell my first chicks legs are becoming more of the color, but the other baby still had yellow legs. will her legs soon turn slate, or will they always be yellow? I could have swore polish have slate legs! I just think this is odd!

is this a sexing tool? legs that are yellow is one gender and slate yellow is another?

can someone help me out? im new to this breed, and im relying on these babies as my new show stock.

If adult Polish are supposed to have slate legs then you must understand slate legs (blue) are caused by a white skinned bird with dermal melanin. Without dermal melanin then the legs are white. A yellow skinned bird with dermal melanin will have willow (green) legs. Without the dermal melanin then the legs will be yellow. Black legs can exist with either body skin color. Leg color does sometimes develop as the chick ages but I cannot see how an actual yellow legged chick could change to a slate legged chick.

Your statement of "greenish slate" in the first paragraph isn't correct. They are different things.

this was a few days ago.....the one with the slate legs has a more slate color....I didn't mean to state greenish...LOL

ive seen many people with polish chicks and yellow legs but their older birds are slate.

all of my breeder's birds have slate legs......so I find it odd id have a baby with yellow orange.....whatever you like to call it.

I have two polish chicks as well, a silver laced bearded one and a white-crested-black one. The silver laved has a dark blue/dark slate coloring and the white-crested one has yellow legs with a large dark blue/dark slate spot on her right hock.
