You can cut the feathers as short as you want to. Blood feathers, the ones that will bleed, are very different from normal ones. Edit to Add: If you do accidentally clip one that bleeds, pull it out quick with a pair of pliers. That will stop the bleeding. Have some flour or corn starch close by also to sprinkle on it to stop bleeding.
