Polish roo turning white?

What could cause a change like this? a deficiency or is it genetic maybe?
(He's currently going thru a molt rn, I'm excited to see if he'll keep the color or what. Currently his crest has lots of white feathers coming in, where black ones used to be)

He's only a year old, so it can't be old age
It's neat indeed, I'm actually hoping he keeps the color or changes even more(which is what looks to be happening!)

Hormonal changes is what causes grey hair in people.

Seems like in chickens... white and black can be hiding other colors... probably his genetic history revealing itself.

I doubt he will go back to solid black... agree he looks pretty cool!

I don't believe it to be a deficiency.

Curious to see if he stays mottled looking or becomes ALL white!

Looks like mottling or exchequer which will get more white as they age.

I agree with Cyprus.
It looks like a normal mottling pattern that is merely showing as the bird grows older.

My mottled Cochin started with a few white spots, but as she aged, and especially after mature molts, grew more and more white spots.

Speckled Sussex are the same way. You can tell the age of the bird by the concentration of spots.

I have heard of cocks growing in white sickles after molting. I believe the reason is genetic.

I have a black bodied white headed polish hen that has her feathers on her body changing from black to white and brown as she moults through a span of a year or two.
