Polish Rooster Dance

Yep, that's the dominance dance. He's letting the hens (and any other roos) know that the hens are HIS, and that any other roos are beneath him in the priority standings. He's Alpha Roo, and wants to make sure everyone else knows it and acknowledges it. (And sometimes they do it just because they're being a butt....

I had my RIR roo challenge me that way a couple of times -- when I snatched him up and carried him around a while, that convinced him that I was alpha roo (alpha hen, then!) and that he was second in command. He got the message

He's a very good roo in all other aspects: he guards the other chickens, both pullets and cockerels, and offers any tasty treats he finds to the girls first (ah, such a gentleman!) and is in general very good to have around. He also has this funny warning sound that's like half growl, half hawwww... and it immediately makes the others look around to see what's up. (usually one of our cats strolling across the yard) . Enjoy the dancing!
