Polish Rooster with split and bleeding spur, Any Ideas how to fix it?

Our Rooster has a spur that was split in half and bleeding, we put some Blue Kote on it and a bandage but he still stands on one leg as if in pain. Does anyone have any ideas that would be helpful for him to relieve the pain? Should we give him some anti-biotic water to help prevent infection?

Not sure but.... DO NOT USE ANYTHING CONTAINING A "CAINE"- they are poisonous to chickens. So if you're using antibiotic ointment, be sure it does not contain a "pain reliever" that is a caine. (IE Benzocaine, Lidocaine, etc.) Also, styptic powder is always good to have on hand, but flour will work if you don't have any.

Is he out with his hens? If he is, then he may be standing on one leg to prevent them from pecking his injury. He may also be favoring it because of the bandage; it could feel weird on his spur. We have a rooster who has had a lot of foot injuries, and favoring the injured and bandaged foot is normal behavior for him.

Thank you for the information, he is with the hens and one has tried to help him get the bandage off once. I read on here that someone uses pliers to twist off the spurs casing and then bandage the flesh, has anyone else tried this? It sounds painful and gross but they said it was less painful than removing the whole spur. My roos spurs are not really long yet he is only 7 months old.

Does anyone know if feather footed roos grow spurs?

I would think twisting that off would be terribly painful. When dogs to that at the vet we cut their nail off at the quick close to the toe, stop it with stiptic powder and wrap it. I would tend to do that if it were my rooster. Get some sharp nail cutters and snip it off as close to the leg as possible. Use stiptic powder because it will bleed and apply pressure for a few minutes. If you do not have stiptic powder corn starch will work as well, even flour. Then I would put a wrap on it for a day or two.

We changed the bandage today and the flesh was very swollen , even more then the spur itself, we tried to give him some antibiotic water but he refused.

He does not seem to be in a ton of pain, he even felt good enough to try to mount one of the girls. He even still tries to be aggressive if he sees his favorite color of orange. I dont know how it couldnt hurt him.
