One common thing that most judges look at if obviously their crest. The crest must be centered, not lopsided. If it is thats a major point docker. Umm, body shape, is it correctly sized, color etc.

Do their crests have to be super poofy or just poofy?

Some tips on show quality vs poor/hatchery quality. (now not all hatchery Polish are poor quality though, but most are)

Bad signs:

- small crest
- large comb, or comb other than a V comb
- poor color, in laced birds poor color is having too much or too little black or white, having "spangling" instead of lacing, having too much black "peppering" in the tail, having smutty or poorly defined lacing. In white crested blacks, having white feathers on body and not crest, having too much black in crest.
- tail higher than 45-50 degrees. Especially "squirrel" tails - a disqualification. They're tails that stick straight up or back over the bird.
- too small or too thin looking bird.

Good signs:

- BIG, full, poofy crest
- upright crest, not lopsided
- tail LESS than 50 degrees from horizontal line. Preferably 45 exact.
- good color. Laced birds must have good, full on lacing with not too much black or too little black, must not have solid white or brown feathers, white crested black birds must not have solid white feathers on body other than crest, must not have more than 30% of their crest black in color.
- toes that are well spaced and of proper length
- no spurs on hens
- comb that is very small to non-existent

Anyone else feel free to add on.

I am glad you ask about using Crele. I am waiting on 6 Crele Polish eggs next month and am a bit excited. I have a silver-laced cockeral, a white cockeral and a golden-laced pullet. I have incubating 5 polish eggs at this time. I do have one question. If you breed a laced polish to another polish are you always going to get sex-linked?? i really love working with genetics but am still learning about this in chickens. Thanks!

I would definitely PREFER not to breed any related birds together, but it is almost impossible to find these guys, related or not. Sigh. I will have to work with what I have for now and hopefully be able to outcross with the GL and go from there. I will definitely be on the lookout for anyone willing to share some eggs in the future. I've been contacting, begging, and stalking breeders of these birds for the last 2 years, so I think most people would consider me committed.

There is a lady here in Tennessee who is working on Tolbunts....the name she goes by is poultrylady. If you are looking for possibly new blood I know she does sell some eggs. May pay off to check with her to gain some new blood.

Oh KellyHM....I am so jealous!!!! They are very beautiful. I am just not starting to build my polish breeding stock. I love this breed..my little GL is such a sweetheart.

Silver Laced HENS will always create sex-linked offspring with non-silver males, yes. Otherwise with other colors or a silver male, no.
