Well doesn't that give you an excuse to hatch more in hopes of getting a male?

funny you should say that because 17 more eggs went in the incubator last nite.... i couldn't wait for one of my silkies to volunteer...

I had hatched 5 in the bator, for my fun, and 5 under three silkies, then took the bator chicks out and put them in a different coop, added the silkie hatched Polish, then the 3 moms. By night, all 10 were snuggled away. One silkie mom could not understand why some of them would stand in a corner and not get under. So she kept following them and sitting, and making a noise, eventually they understood! It was interesting to watch.

That's good to know cause half of them have the mohawk look. The feathers are just starting to come up. Is it easier to tell when the heads are feathered out?

NOPE!!!!
they are very frustrating , just when you think you got it figured out... they change again..

i guess in a couple more months we will know for sure for sure

Crest shape as a chick has nothing to do with gender, far as my experience goes. It just has to do with crest quality/size as well as vault size.

My new babies!! These are WCB x Tolbunt. A long term project. I know what you're thinking, but trust me, I'll get rid of the white crest.

hi there everyone. I am fairly new to Polish...I fell in love with the breed about a year ago. I currently have 2 silver laced hens, 2 gold laced hens, 2 buff laced hens, and my newest additions that I just picked up yesterday, 2 Tolbunt hens. I am now ready to add a rooster to the mix. I am looking for a really good quality Gold Laced rooster close enough to Oregon for me to pick up. Thought I'd throw that out there in case anyone can help me out. I am hoping to get a good quality roo that is already grown and a proven breeder with good manners. Of course I will be keeping my eye out for the ever elusive Tolbunt roo as well.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself here on the polish thread, and I hope to make some new friends here.

I just love my polish!

OK, here's the thing with the crests. They can only be sexed by shape in the first few days after hatch. Once real feathers start coming in, all bets are off until they get older. NO Polish should have a mohawk look. Not even the boys. Crests should grow in evenly around and either get poofy for the girls or pointy and long for the boys. Frizzles are always harder to sex, but can be to some accuracy in the first few days. There is also that one boy who will fool you until they crow and those, in my experience, are the most gorgeous boys out there.

And, don't forget, most hatchery Polish don't have vaulted skulls, so sexing them by crest shape won't work. The bird MUST be vaulted to use this method.

I agree. And the more show-type your line is, the easier it becomes. I now have a 94% accuracy rate based on the test my son and I ran for his science fair project. However, if you don't mark them when they're a few days old- like I did for the project- and keep marking them, you may find you quickly forget who was who.
