the front of the crest is more swept back than rounded

Christine,

So how do the crests look at a few days old? Are the boys more pointy, and the girls more rounded?

Quote:
OK, here's the thing with the crests. They can only be sexed by shape in the first few days after hatch. Once real feathers start coming in, all bets are off until they get older. NO Polish should have a mohawk look. Not even the boys. Crests should grow in evenly around and either get poofy for the girls or pointy and long for the boys. Frizzles are always harder to sex, but can be to some accuracy in the first few days. There is also that one boy who will fool you until they crow and those, in my experience, are the most gorgeous boys out there.

And, don't forget, most hatchery Polish don't have vaulted skulls, so sexing them by crest shape won't work. The bird MUST be vaulted to use this method.

I am going to say the one on the left is a girl. Though, you need shots from the top down. That is how you need to look at them to determine the shape. Girls will be round, very round. Boys will be more of a oval shape towards the back. It is the back that you really need to look at. A girl will look like someone cut a ball in half and stuck it on her head. A boy will look like someone squeezed it and then stuck it on his head.

I don't have any day olds right now to show the difference, mine are all almost a week. Once you see the difference, you can tell as soon as they fluff up after hatch.

Hello all! I have three little Polish bantam babies in the brooder right now that I hatched myself. Two look like they are white crested black, and one is all white, and FRIZZLE! Sooooo adoreable! I'll try to post pics later today when I get home from the office.......

That little white frizzle bantam is just darling...Looks like a little angel with it's curly wing feathers coming in.......They're 9 days old now, and still pretty little....it's my first time hatching bantams. I just hatched three Buckeye chicks last Thursday, and they all seem to be the same size, except the little Polish chicks are taller and very quick on their feet!

Happy to find this thread!

Sharon

Thanks Christine,

I don't have any day olds either, but that will help a lot when I do.

I have about 20 2 month old "Crele" Polish,( for lack of a better thing to call them.) I will have to weed some of them out soon. A lot of variation in color. But I have to learn more about how to develop this color.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about the Crele, BJ. It's something that we don't have, so I haven't looked into how to go about getting the color correct. (Or close to it)

BJ, we haven't played with crele's, yet... Everrything I've read about the variety states that it takes a few generations to get the coloring right. About the only thing I can offer is to hatch as many as you can and cull ruthlessly. Be very picky about what you are putting back into your program.

J,

Where are you reading about the variety? I don't even know what coloring I should be looking for. Although I know they have to be barred and have brown/red in them.
Is that even right.

This is the pair I am working with.
I have about 20 of their offspring to choose from. Not many have the brown/ red in them. But they are pretty. Most are just black with white barring. Many different degrees of barring, from very dark to mostly white. I really need to get pics......
