Hello, Polish lovers! I just discovered this thread and will be going back to read previous posts. I've had WCBs for a few years just because I enjoy them but am getting more interested in breeding quality birds. My WCB roo that I bought at the Ohio Nationals last year appears to be shooting blanks--not a fertile egg from his three "wives," which I am gradually switching over to the blue cockerel that I got in August (thanks, CalicoKat--he's calming down now!) until I find a nice new roo. Also got some nice gold-laced from eggs I purchased this summer; unfortunately only 1 pullet out of 10 chicks, but she looks pretty good.
Now a couple of questions (maybe more!) from one desperate to learn:
The Polish breeders club site does not mention a distinction between bantam and LF Polish, just a weight range that seems to apply to all, but I see listings for bantam and LF. I don't even know what I have! Can somebody help me out?
Are Polish more susceptible to disease than other breeds? I have rarely had a problem with cocci in my chicks, but when it did occur, it began with Polish chicks. I've never had a chick develop it that wasn't in a brooder with a Polish chick that got sick first. And yes, I do keep my brooders sanitized and clean!
Also, a few years ago I had a cockerel that developed what appeared to be Marek's; I isolated him and nobody else got sick, but one of my GL chicks is showing possible signs of it now--quarantined! Of course, he is the cockerel that I had chosen to keep; fortunately I kept a back up, but he isn't quite as nice.
I intend to attend a few shows this fall looking for breeding stock and appreciate any and all advice!
Thanks, everyone!
