What color polish are you wanting to know about, different colors have different flaws.

I would look up the APA & ABA standards of perfection or look on the polish club website.

SL & GL under 1 yr old should not have white in crest, Only older laced Polish ar allowed some white in crest due to age.

WC Black Polish should not have white wing tips,

WC Blue Polish are allowed to have white wing tips,

All Polish should Not have wings that shoot strait down like a seabright or serama,

SQ polish should have nice dence, big crest, watch out for crooked crest.

Most polish get & have feather stubs on their legs these need to be plucked throughly days before a show. Certain color varieties have more feather stuns than others.

All Polish should have nice dark color legs, not sure about cuckoos though.
I believe the cuckoo color variety might be allowed light color legs , you might have to doubble check woth someone about cuckoo polish, I have never had them.

Any more questions feel free to ask ?

If you don't have that tiny bit of white on the tips of the wings of wc black birds, you will lose that nice white crest. The small booklet "Crested Birds" discusses this in detail and knowledgable judges know that a good Polish should have < 1/8 inch of white at the tips of their wings. Several noted judges have told me just that when looking at my birds. True, some less knowledgable will cut you for wing tips, hence faking is rampant, but you sure as heck want it in your breeder birds. You do not want much of it or any on the tail feathers. Often there is just sort of a transparency at the very edge of the wing when seen in bright sunlight, but a Polish IS a bi-colored birds and there will be that tipping in all the colors if you look closely and if it is a good white-crested bird. I find stubs are present only in certain lines. Breed away from those lines and you will be fine. I have several generations now which have never had a stub. I also have one line where it does crop up and I have to check those toes carefully before each show. Tails are a big problem in the breed, with many otherwise nice birds having too high a tail set. The Polish Breeders Club is a great resource of information and anyone serious about the breed should join:http://www.polishbreedersclub.com/

White-Crested cuckoo Polish have mottled legs, not slate as the other varieties. Even many judges do not know this and I have twice had one of my DQed birds go on to win the breed or class after I showed the judge the standard. Those who show wc cuckoos would be well-advised to carry a copy of the standard with them for just such an occasion- especially at fairs.

Hi! I have a bantam Polish chick, and I was hoping someone could help me with the color. Sorry I don't have current pic to post, but I can do that later this week. Anyway, she's about a month old and SO tiny! She's like half the size of my silkies that are the same age. I got her at TSC and I got the silkies at Southern States. Anyway, she was all dark yellow (not red) with some gray on her head, wings, and back when I got her. Now her feathers are coming in gold and black on her head and wings and snow white with a small amount of buff on her chest. What the heck is that? lol. I've browsed pics of Polish over and over and haven't seen any like her. I realize she's hatchery stock, so maybe her color doesn't have a name other than mixed, but she's very sweet and we love her very much. Definitely one of our friendliest, most docile chicks.

Also, I keep calling her a "she." She has no comb to speak of at all. Just 2 little tiny triangular flaps, with no color to them at all. I assume that means she's a girl, but maybe Polish cockerals are late bloomers? Thanks!

Hey EveryBody!!! Very NEW to keeping or having Polish Chickens. I recently got a Polish chick and was just wondering if anybody knew if this was a pullet or cockrel? when it was little it's little head looked like a pullet(I saw how to sex chicks on another website), But was just wondering from more Expert People!! and what color would you call this? Looks just white to me?

cmsdvm since it seems that you are one of the BYC resident serious polish breeder of show quality etc.etc. I am going to ask if you can do a bit of documenting for those of us with limited experience. It would be a handy dandy tool to have progressive pictures of the developement of the different varieties of polish. In fact you could copywrite it and sell it through the Polish Breeders Club

Their website has a lot of significant information and I would recomend that anyone with polish read it. Well it is just a thought but a good one and if you have enough pictures already just give you son and his 4-H buddies this as a project.

I love the 4-H clubs.
