Polish Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadly we dont have any great poultry vets in my area. The few vets that will see a chicken at all charge insane amounts that I can't afford. $300 just to get in the door!

I tried to put her outside today to see how she was doing, but my usually independent and frisky hen was so clingy she just wanted to make quiet cheeping sounds and sit on my foot. I brought her right back in after that and have her in another bath next to me right now.

Oh, I hope your girl recovers! Let the sweet thing stay inside with you. A warm blow dry should really feel good after a warm bath. My Silkie was not eating and puffed up and we stayed up with her all night - wound up she had a digestive bacterial infection and thank goodness an injection and follup medication snapped her right back. Another time she got knocked off the nestbox ledge and fell to the dirt floor (Silkies can't fly well) so she got bruised enough to not eat and not able to move. I thought she had a broken bone or something. The vet gave some medication for hurt/bruising and she snapped out of that too.
As for my vet he is not an avian vet per se but he advertises as treating cats/dogs/exotics/birds. Unfortunately for us bird owners vets get more business with cats/dogs but if you can find a dog/cat vet that happens to treat exotics and birds you'll get a good Doc. I investigated strictly avian vets only in my city/county and some charged almost double my vet. My vet charges $40/visit with a discount down to $35 for me as a senior. Of course, shots, medicines, surgeries are additional and one visit can get over $100. He's not strictly an avian specialist so he takes extra care to diagnose my birds correctly and as one post said the waiting room stares are priceless when they see a Silkie waiting for an exam.

I hope your bird is ok Foxhole Farm...look online and see if any of the vet hospitals in your area are teaching students, we have one the next town over that does everything cheap cuz they use 1 Doc and a bunch of students/interns. That sucks that you are having a hard time finding care for her. Our vet is not cheap but he does see my farm animals ( birds, goats) sometimes but I usually know what I need so I just call it in to him and pick up the meds. I sympathize with you I have a sick puppy.

I was wondering if any of you Polish lovers also keep a pair or trio of Geese, I have almost 2 acres fenced with a barn and a 9x9 pond (shared by 5 ducks) and another acre of grassy yard. I also hate possums and coons who love to try to get in my pens. I want to find a good guardian animal. Research and good old farm lore says Geese are the way to go. I do not want a dog they eat too much and often don't do their job. What breeds have you kept? and what breeds will be good guards and not too mean to my polish and D'Uccles. I read that Embdens my 1st choice should not be kept with docile species as they bully. I plan to let them forage in the yard during the day and keeping them in the barnyard at night.

I have never kept geese with chickens but I had when I was in high school a African with my momma ducks and babies and he was the best baby protector I have ever seen. I didn't lose any adult ducks to predators and he was totally calm around people

Thanks for all your kind words an support. Tilly is still in the house getting daily baths. Since I'm not 100% sure what she has, I'm trying to come at her from as many angles as possible. She is getting fatty, protein-rich treats like BOSS and meal worms in a dish next to her fermented feed with oregano and garlic mixed in for anti-fungal and anti-bacterial assistance. She isn't eating as much as I'm used to seeing her consume. She has yet to fill her crop all the way since she has been inside, but she is drinking much more now, and finally eating throughout the day. I added Di-methox for coccidia to her water in case my initial diagnosis was correct afterall. I'm hoping my shotgun attempt hits whatever it is that's bothering her.
