Polish Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello :) I am brand new to polish and just hatching my first eggs. I purchased fertile eggs and had them shipped. They were suppose to be crele and tolbunt... I'm not sure what I actually have though. One is silver and doesn't even have a top hat?
not the best pic since it's indoor lighting but this chick is yellow and blue(grey) and brown. So maybe the tolbunt

blue/grey with a white beard

hard to tell from this angle but this guy is actually a chipmunk

another Chipmunk

no top hat guy

I have one left in the bator that will need to be culled, the belly is abnormally distended and he has a bad foot. :( I'm still waiting on two more that have pipped to make their debut. SO far these guys are adorable, if not the colors I was looking for...

That does look a mixed bag of colours you have there :/
Would you be able to get a pic of them without the yellow tinge to them?

Some polish don't always hatch with a bit top hat so I would not worry too much about your bottom chick in the pic.

Very cute chicks you have there :love

Your ones with a top hat actually have what is called a vaulted skull. That means it's like a baby's head with a soft spot. Their brain makes the "bump" so you have to be extra careful with those

congrats!!

Here are better pics in the outdoor light and now I can actually see their colors better too now that it's daylight hours...
Here are 6 of them. There is also 2 other chipmunks and 1 all yellow still in bator (at least it looks all yellow right now, it may fluff out with a little color we'll see)

Chipmunks

Tan and blue/black - what I thought was a yellow/white beard yesterday is actually a tan color

Yellow chick with brown and blue/black looks blue closer to rump but black further up. Probably my favorite

The non polish ?- I talked to the breeder and she has Appenzeller Spitzhaubens too. She says she only has tolbunt and crele polish and then the AS as white egg layers. So it's possible there was a mix up and one of the AS eggs was sent with the group and that's actually what this guy is? There is a tiny spot on his head

Here's a picture of an AS chick. I don't have them so i can't say for sure. But I'd bet yours is a polish with a non-vaulted head.

I personally would prefer the less tophat chick because of possible injurty to the open skull of the Silkie or Polish breeds (below). The height of the chick tophat doesn't necessarily mean they won't still have a fluffy crest - at least it was that way with my Silkies. The less the skull is open to the brain the better I personally like it. Everyone has a preference and that's just MHO.

Talked to the breeder again and confirmed that the solid blue guy is definitely an AS and not a polish. Some of her AS are blue and sine none of the polish are it wouldn't make sense that the blue came from them.

That is a cool pic of the skull. I was thinking more like a baby's and that eventually solid bone grew in over top but it looks like it stays open. That's so strange, and yes, very vulnerable

Yes, some nice BYC people explained to me and showed pics of the skull - there are other pics of the difference between a regular chicken skull and the vaulted skulls of Silkies and Polish - from very open cavities to slightly smaller cavities in the skull structure. One of my Silkies doesn't have the huge dome skull and yet her crest feathers are just as full and fluffy as the other Silkie that has more of a dome. I will get my next Silkie with less or no domed skull to avoid the possibility of brain or spinal injury from other hens pecking. Chickens can be so mean pecking at each other but it's their way of flock order.

I am looking to trade bbs polish eggs for more bbs polish eggs. BBS is blue black and splash. I live in indiana and i am looking for about 12. I am looking for new blood is the reason.
