I got my first Poland pullet and she's got a lovely temperament.

I don't know much about the breed standard but I was thinking of entering her into a couple of local shows. Is she a good quality bird or just pet standard?

I just got a new polish chick the other day and she is about a week and a half old and is starting to grow its wing ,tail and head poof. its so cute

I run a mixed flock and the Polish are the hardest to keep in the group - they can't see as well so they tend to get 'lost' around our free-roaming setup, and most of the ones I started with got picked on pretty badly by the other birds bothering their headfeathers (especially at pinfeather stage). A few of them have learned to get along with everyone really well, though, and are part of our permanent flock. They are adorable and so much fun to watch, I wish the other chickens thought so, too!

Fingers crossed she turns out to be a girl At a week and half its hard to tell gender. They sure can keep you guessing for a while.

Nice pics! All the things you described are some of the downsides of them. Mine get lost and even get picked on by other polish!! Those crests sure attract a lot of attention. I have 13 polish, 1 Amber and an Amber X polish. The X polish sure is interesting to look at to say the least :/

Hi. My friend is probably getting six polish crested (not sure what color) but she said they are gonna be straight run so I was wondering if there is a way to feather sex them? Because they have to get rid of any roosters they get. Is there anything at a young age that can help determine cockerels from hens? I told her that as log as neither of my two silkies are roosters I'd take one of her roosters if she gets one. Would that be ok seeing as how I currently have two silkies (3 weeks) and four GSL (3 1/2 weeks) the GSL are hens though. Also I know you shouldn't have two roosters with less than 8 hens but could I still take a rooster if I were to maybe find someone who wants to add it to their flock or maybe I get a couple more hens???? Please help

This is just me. I don't like mixing breeds where a roo is added. I don't like the possibility of mixed breed chicks. And my philosophy is that if I have doubts and no experience, then I don't do it, and wait until a future date when I'm sure of my research before my ultimate decision. At my first chicken-keeping attempts I was too timid to say "no" to my friend that needed to re-home a couple pullets. Now I have much more will power and do a lot of research before I commit to any additions. JMHO

I know and I have been doing a lot of reading, but seeing as how I already have a mixed flock I don't see how one/one more rooster could do anything. Also is there something about mixed breeds I should know? or do you just not like them? Also would it be ok to have two roosters with 6 hens? I know most people don't like less then 8 hens if you want two roosters but I'm just checking. Worst thing is I either don't take a rooster or give a rooster to someone else.
