My Polish hen Mrs. Santa Claus -- She's special to say the least lol.

I miss my Polish. I had gold laced females and 2 silver laced brothers. That is until I asked a friend to order some extra for me when she was going to order from Murrey McMurrey. I wanted 4 females, vaccinated against Mareks and whatever vaccines they were offering. She had been given dozens and dozens of Guinea eggs by me so she didn’t charge me she said. I kept them in quarantine for a week and they seemed ok. So i added them to my flock. My entire flock died of Marek disease. She confessed to me that they weren’t vaccinated, didn’t even come from McMurreys. She was given the chicks by a friend of hers. I told her she was no longer welcome on our property. 2 years later, we called the sheriff because someone was on our property with a flash light. And guess what: It was her again. Stealing my female guineas and all their eggs. So after she had decimated our chicken flock, she decimated our Guinea flock. I have 2 male Guineas left. We did get 3 new hens and 1 rooster from someone (no polish), just to see if they would stay alive. They did. The Mareks is gone. But the damage has been done. I don’t easily hate a person, but that person: I'll make an exception for her. Darn, do I miss my Polish.

So sorry about losing your flock. A week quarantine is not long enough for introducing new birds on the property. I quarantine new birds 6 to 8 weeks to monitor health -- not just for obvious signs like Marek's, but for other signs like coccidiosis, respiratory issues, general lethargic behavior, plus I take an immediate fecal sample to the vet for analysis. Sound overly cautious? Maybe, but this process has saved me from introducing a sick bird to the general flock so the vet could diagnose and/or treat it immediately. I'm okay at diagnosing and treating most illness or injury in my birds but I've been fortunate enough to have a vet that sees cats/dogs/exotics/birds for problems beyond my expertise.

Some people in this world are just plain crazy and do unethical things, We must choose our acquaintances carefully. I don't do trades with other backyard chicken owners. I order from reputable breeders -- costs a fortune but you get the honest scoop re vaccinations, etc., and a good long quarantine saves a backyard flock in the long run. Hope you get some of your Polish again. They are sweet like my fluffball Silkies are.

Yes, you're right. I only have a small coop and could not get more than 4 polish. I asked the lady to get me 4 extra chickens when she ordered from Murrey McMurrey. She was going to place an order. And yes, I only want vaccinated chickens. I was under the impression they came from the hatchery and were fully vaccinated. Until I found out otherwise. Yes, some people are unethical.

Oh, I love that. My Polish used to be like that. We had 2 brothers who were the sweetest things. They would run to us, sit in our laps, wanting to be held and making the cutest little happy sounds. They are so personable and actually, I think even; loving. I never thought chickens would be this way. Good luck with your sweethearts.
