Interesting idea. Do you know if the Vit E works as well as the Vaseline to actually prevent frost bite? (I don't have the poofy breeds any longer, but I know what you mean about the white feathers stained & dirty.) We had some nasty -40'F nights out here last winter, so everybody got Vaseline not just our roo. They haven't gone through a molt et & still look dirty.

Oil is oil - and will behave as oil - vit E just happens to be a nutritious oil. What causes frostbite is moisture that freezes the comb/wattles. Vit E oil will make them soft and supple and water and oil don't mix so yes the E will work on moisture prevention. The Walmart brand also has soybean and coconut oil in the formula base. Vit E oil from Walmart has worked for us for almost 2 years. I used to use olive oil or vaseline and both are so intensively greasy on the feathers that I went with my vet's recommendation. Actually he recommended either Vit A OR Vit E so we went with the Vit E from Walmart.

On the farm chickens were kept away from access to duck areas. For one thing ducks love to filthy up water to build up algae so they can dive for the scum and chickens will drink that filth so keep them separated. We've never trimmed our Silkies' crests. They seem to nibble each other's faces and in a day or two have little peep eye holes in their crests. Why not use a soft girl's hair band to get the crest up out of his eyes? One owner used panty hose cut in circle rings to use like soft rubber bands around the crest. My Silkies are both older hens and the crest thing doesn't seem to bother their alertness or vision. They tilt their head if they want to see overhead or behind them. The younger hens need time to adjust to the crests because we really didn't want to start cutting their feathers - why have a crested bird if you're just going to chop it up?

I didn't want to chop it up, I tried the ponytail, but he kept taking it out. what else was I supposed to do? it was either lose him or give him a haircut.

Warning excessive emocon use...Sorry I'm just sooooooo totally STOKED!!!!
I have 9 bcw polish eggs that are set to hatch THIS WEEKEND!!!!

I put 10 in, 9 candled beautifully for a 90% fetilization rate -

Update: humidity disaster caused an early hatch, 2 for sure deaths and 2 probable deaths

, 2 hatched/1 hatching

and 2 looking good for hatching on schedule

Sorta the same thing happened to me once the humidity dropped like that and I freaked out it was the day before my hatch. Outta 10 i got 8 . 1 hatched with had with a Croked toe but other than that it was good ! Positive thoughts and I said a little prayer try not to worry
