Polish Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, once he started growing it, it just took off. It's also the reason he's named after a devil character from a novel: it splits off into a fork at the back so he'll look like he have horns once he's fully grown. They are a lot of work but a delight to have around. :)

It's very cool that you can see it..most Polish's crest cover their V combs so they rarely get seen ..he is definitely the cutest one I've seen in a long time..now when my guys get older I'm gonna have to try crossing them to something to see if I can get me a funky chicken..lol

It is! I wasn't sure if he'd get the V-shaped comb of the Polish or the rose comb of the Sebright at first. I'm hoping the it might straighten out a little & get his partial crest to grow in between the back points so it'll look like he has horns, but I think it might be permanently folded over to the side.

This is my first time owning chickens & breeding/hatching, so I wasn't sure what I was going to get! They've been a delight to watch develop, that's for sure. :)

So I have a question for anyone with polish. How broody are they? I thought they weren't suppose to be broody, but it seems that my one year old Tolbunt is going broody. She has been in the nest box all day there are no eggs under her I took them all out. I have way too many chickens right now my husband will freak out if I hatch more.

Awww! A Tolbunt - so cute! I have a different crested/bearded breed - Silkies. They are a very broody bunch. However I thought they were being too broody even for Silkies. Turned out sometimes when my flock molts they get reclusive and cranky and hide out in a nestbox most of the next few weeks to molt or recover and had nothing to do with being broody. Even my Ameraucana took a few days to hide out in the coop while going through it. I guess molt is very uncomfortable for them and they'll hide out in a nestbox away from the normal day-to-day activity of the flock. Whenever a hen takes extra time in a nestbox I supplement her with some extra vitamins (Poly-Vi-Sol no iron) and some extra protein treats while regrowing her new plumage. If she's truly broody the same regimen would still apply plus making sure she gets out a couple times a day to eat/drink/dust-bathe before returning to the nest again.

I had read they weren't very broody either, but I have 1 that will collect the eggs of all the hens in 1 spot in their house & sit on them. She's been doing this since they started laying eggs. I know she isn't Full Broody because when I take the eggs, she won't continue to sit on the nest & I can get her off eggs with their seed/mealworm mix.

I got 3 new polish chicks on Saturday!!! 2 GL and 1 wc black. All super sweet.
