Political Ramblings

There could be lots of reasons to have nice things and be on food stamps. Could be a sudden loss of income in which case you'd be driving the car you bought when you had money. Could be 15 people living in one house, using extra money to buy stupid stuff. Could be borrowing a friends car to shop.

I wish I could be as comfortable as some people here with judging someone just by a 10 minute glimpse at the grocery store.

What is your point, you think because you know some people who have taken advantage of the system that naturally all of them are doing it? Or is it that no one should get help because some will abuse it?

OK once again no one is saying that no one needs help. But there are a lot of people that use the system instead of working.

How long should someone get help ? 6 months, a year, 5years, 10 years, forever ?

EXACTLY! How long should someone get help? I think there should be a limit. FREE aid should be available for a certain period of time. During that time, the recipient should get their act together and enroll in some type of skills relating to seeking and securing a job, some type of trade, etc, etc, etc. We have FREE classes in my area for things exactly like this and not too many people take advantage of it. If you have time to make another baby and get more assistance, then you have time to enroll in a class.

I think that the time limit of FOREVER is too long to be on assistance.

Just how is it you pick that limit?

I'm unemployed because I turned my boss in for illegal activity. In response he trashed my career. My skills are useful for a small group of people - and they all know my boss. It's really unlikely I'll get a job until the investigation is finished, and possibly not even then. I have two degrees. 30 years of experience. What skills do you think I should pick up? Auto mechanics? Running a cash register? Using Excel? I could teach the class.

No one's going to hire me in my field, if they talk to my ex boss, and no one's going to hire me for similar, but a couple steps down work because of that whole "you'll leave as soon as you get a better offer" thing.

I'd be fine doing computer consulting, but I have no idea how to market myself. Those classes aren't free. I'd be happy to teach at a community college - overqualified. High school requires a teaching certificate - which requires money.

So tell me. What's my limit for receiving assistance?

You're referring to the time limit of FOREVER??????

You said there should be a limit.  I'm asking you how you decide a "limit" when each individual's story is so very different?

True. And we should look at each person's situation. For someone who is not actively seeking and searching to do better, then they should not be allowed to receive free aid FOREVER. For those that prefer to sit on their bottom, watch cable all day and not be a productive citizen in their community, they should not receive free aid FOREVER. For those that have committed a crime and found guilty of it, should not be allowed to receive free aid FOREVER. For those who have turned down a job, because it wasn't the "right shift", should not be allowed to receive free aid FOREVER.

Free Aid FOREVER is not the answer. Sorry.

ChickenEd, you are wrong on mental illness. We've been over this ground before, so I'm not going there. Many of the mentally ill are not adequately treated, many insurance companies cover very little mental health care, and getting help for some one who doesn't see themselves as ill is nearly impossible.
How exactly does one tell the difference from someone who is mentally ill and someone who is bullheaded and wants things thier own way and leaves an otherwise loving home to become homeless? it seems there is an enigma or breakdown in the the human reasoning to understand this issue.

For starters people should be required to come and get the free stuff not have it mailed to them. I will post more things later I have many.
