Political Ramblings

For those that don't have the news on, there is a school shooting that just happened.

Looks bad. Every time I refresh my browser the kill count has gone up. Looks like 26 so far. ABC says there might be two shooters.

Horrible as well. Twitter is all up in flames of kill the NRA and that the NRA supported this act of terror.

Lets talk gun control. How do we make buying a gun any stricter without making it illegal are there any steps we can take? There is nothing I can think of to making buying guns any stricter.

Ban certain types? What legitimate use is there for a semi-automatic?
Restrict number you're allowed to own?
Require yearly renewals/inspections for a fee?

Training followed by a written and practical exam as a part of licensing for any gun and must be renewed like a driver's license. And just like car vs bus vs motorcycle if you want to buy a complete different sort of gun then there is additional training.

Eliminate all the loop holes and gaps that allow people to buy guns without waiting periods and background checks, like gun shows. And make sure that criminal history and mental health records are actually up to date.

There are always going to be exceptions but I think we could do better at keeping people from being able to easily get a gun on the fly and do better educate people about them.

Also, working towards developing a culture with more empathy.

Does anyone believe that the owning and carrying of either a hand gun or a semi automatic weapon, esculates violence? You hit me so I pick up a stick. You pick up a bigger stick etc. Surely, this is the same argument as against nuclear proliferation? I am confused as to what the job of the police is, if it is not to protect society? I thought police took an oath to uphold the law and keep the peace?

Here's the London Met. Police website on its crime prevention service:

http://content.met.police.uk/Site/crimeprevention

All UK police regions have a crime prevention programme. Surely, it's the same in the US!

Renewal fees are good I guess? How does a waiting period stop someone from buying a gun. I guess it could stop the impulse of immediately going out and buying one in a fit of rage. It would be nice to also have better mental health. Have society not look at it as you are crazy if you go to the mental hospital. What would an absurd number of handguns be or rifles for example? Is 5 handguns too much or 5 rifles? Is a gun per each member of a house hold too much or just right?

Mamaroo you asked what legitimate use of a semi automatic? I assume you mean like owning an m4 and not handgun or a a rifle like a ruger 22. Nothing besides having the ability to re-cock the weapon after every shot and getting a multiple shots off at a target.

I've expressed my feeling towards the victims of this awful tragedy on another thread.

What's happened is very similar to the Dunblane, Scotland school massacre in 1996 in which 16 five year old children, a teacher and the gunman died.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_school_massacre

That event, not the first massacre in the UK, resulted in the banning of handguns. Perhaps this massacre in Connecticut in which, it seems, a young man with a personality disorder managed to get hold of someone's gun, will finally encourage those with a rational attitude to gun control to finally speak out in the US. Surely, the loss of 20 such young lives is enough.

President Obama made a moving speech and was clearly very emotional. here's the text of that speech from Fox59.com:

"This afternoon, I spoke with Governor Malloy and FBI Director Mueller. I offered Governor Malloy my condolences on behalf of the nation, and made it clear he will have every single resource that he needs to investigate this heinous crime, care for the victims, counsel their families.

"We’ve endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. And each time I learn the news I react not as a President, but as anybody else would -- as a parent. And that was especially true today. I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do.

"The majority of those who died today were children -- beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers -- men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams.

"So our hearts are broken today -- for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children’s innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain.

"As a country, we have been through this too many times. Whether it’s an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago -- these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. And we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics.

"This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter and we’ll tell them that we love them, and we’ll remind each other how deeply we love one another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now. In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans. And I will do everything in my power as President to help.

"Because while nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need -- to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them, that the love they felt for those they lost endures not just in their memories but also in ours.

"May God bless the memory of the victims and, in the words of Scripture, heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds."
