I don't understand your point, or how this story relates to carrying a weapon in the US. He brought a gun into a country that does not permit guns....
He followed the laws of both countries and was arrested in Mexico where the law says you can carry a gun of a certain type but has no bill of rights or constitutional amendment to back the law. That is the difference.

Sorry. No sympathy. Any search of "bring gun to Mexico" will tell you not to. There are no specs on size or type, just don't. It was a very dumb move. Five minutes of research before leaving the states would have kept any of it from happening.

I don't think you know the complete story. He took the gun to the U.S. customs at the border filled out the proper paperwork and was told to show it to the Mexicans customs. Everything was legal. But he was still arrested. Mexico has very strict gun laws but they don't seem to hold down the killings. So how would stricter gun laws here help ?

People hunt in Mexico all the time, it is big business, they usually fly to the ranches and avoid the border crooks.

We have a very well proven gun right here Mexico doesnt, if the roles were reverse we would not be holding an innocent man. How it relates is how the individual is treated when possessing a gun whether or not the country has gun rights.

Are you suggesting that we would never imprison someone because they followed the the laws of their country, which happened to be in conflict with ours?

He brought a weapon in to Mexico that was not legal. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/12/mexico-jon-hammar-jailed-release_n_2284252.html

Is he treated differently from other Mexican prisoners?

The weapon he brought was on the list of approved weapons. I read the HP article and it even said the barrel measurement was in question. It is pretty obvious what is happenning there and I stand by my statement that if the mexicans had a strong gun rights law like we do this would likely not even be happenning. This is middleeast type law.

The stories are conflicting. Some say it was ok, some say it was an inch shorter than allowed.
The US consulate says 'no guns'. http://tijuana.usconsulate.gov/tijuana/warning.html
Getting permission to bring a gun across the border is extremely difficult - and not done while crossing. http://rollybrook.com/guns.htm
That same blog also points out that transporting guns is also illegal without a specially obtained permit.
The whole thing just soloidifies why when you have laws you need a clear right that backs up the law. That is what gun supporters know, if they lose the 2nd it is over it is like Mexico or any other country even the UK. Put the same scenario but replace the gun charge with unlawful assembly or speaking out against the mexican government and see what happens with the supporters of those rights.
