poll: are you legal or an outlaw?

Technically I'm legal. I have 6 and they're all girls, and my coop is 50 ft from everyone else's houses.

BUT, I refuse to buy a freakin' license, so I'm illegal in a way. It's $5 a year, so it's not a money issue. It's more that I don't like my actions being monitored!

we are LEGAL

No chickens yet. I'm on .48 acres in a Medium Density Residential zoned area. No chickens or poultry permitted except on low density residential or agricultural zoned land. This is a crunchy-granola college town, the zoning board is pretty reasonable, and I've heard changes are in the works.

I'm not about to try illegal since it would be hard to keep the coop/run secret. I live on a corner lot in a active neighborhood (lots of people walking, jogging, biking) and I think someone would hear chickens. And I have one neighbor who is VERY TENSE and is quick to get worked up about anything. We have a chain link fence and lots of trees to give our property some privacy but I don't think it's enough.

illegal... unfortunately. My sweet little 9 year old daughter wanted to raise a silkie for the local farm show and we were told NO. So... we talked to the only neighbor who can see into our yard, and did it anyway. We have 3 bantams, two silkies and one we have no clue. Think a polish bantam. Hoping none are roos. The downside is that we have fallen totally and completely in love with these little darlings. They are sweet and fascinating to watch. I love to sit outside with them as they de-bug our yard. They are only 5 weeks old at this point and live in the sun-room. My hubbys sits with all three of them on his lap and watches TV. They snuggle right down and are tottally content.

I need to move to the country... I want more and more and more...

can you say...SUBURBIA?! We purposely did NOT check the land covenants, but we're prettyyyyy sure it is not legal in ourvery nice suburbs.

thank goodness for fabulous, supportive neighbors! Our six *hopefully* pullets who were just moved to their outside coop and run (strategically placed under our deck, with the mesh on one side covered on one side by a lattice), and two silkies who are still being brooded inside have the neighbors sneaking over to visit them all the time

I think that makes you more of a SPEAKEASY than an illegal operation. Illegal makes it sound that is morally wrong.
That is just my opinion.
I think that we should think and refer to ourselves not as criminals rather as social protesters on otherwise unpopular laws. The more people who get chickens and or know of chickens the greater our power to change the laws so let us speak easy and keep it on the low but also let us popularize the owning and possessing of poultry as pets and cheap egg makers. While treating our pets as a valuable resource to the planet and our families. In addition we should make sure we are ambassadors to our neighbors encouraging them to either join us or at least give us their vote when the time comes for further action.
