poll: are you legal or an outlaw?

We thought we would be legal. We live in the middle of farm country in nj and are surrounded by state forest. About 50% of my neighbors have some kind of livestock, regardless of lot size. I was shocked to find out (when we applied for a zoning/building permit for two "sheds") that because we don't have 5 acres we are not allowed any liveestock because we do not meet the "right to farm" rules. Even if we had 5, to meet the "right to farm" rules we would also have to collect 2500 a year from our farm products. The zoning permit person said "good thing you don't actually have chickens, ". Then she said "everyone here does, not an issue unless there are complaints". I might apply for a varience though. I really wanted to have a 4H chicken club for the local kids. Kind of hard to do that and hide the birds.

I have the same rules but I live on 5 acres (means I can have 108). I only have 7 chicks so when I found this out I immediately called DH and told it was time to build a WAAAAYYY bigger coop!

I was sure we could have chickens because a neighbor had them, but when I actually checked into it, we aren't zoned for it (even though we have really big lots). But I'm doing it anyway - my first 4 chicks are arriving mid-June!

I assume it's legal where I am because the person across the street from me has chickens I'm not sure the limit here since I only have about an acre of land. But I like to see someone complain. Since houses here are pretty far away from eachother and the person across the street from me owns the house next to hers so that helps.

totally illegal...but I bribe my neighbors with eggs

I was initially told I am "allowed" 20, but now told I shouldn't have. I don't care, problem is we are near a lake and a LOT of people with $$ have been building some nice houses, I am going to be building a new coop over a hill and put up some stockade to reduce the noise. Not too bad except when it's time to downsize(cuz too many roos). My chickens are pets, not livestock, so that rule doesn't apply, right?

Moved to a rural area, only to find out that I'm an outlaw....but in the burbs that I cam from I was legal. Go figure. Its all relative I say.
