I've never had any RIR, but your description of them makes me want to stay away. I have 2 New Hampshire which are derived from RIR, but they are sweethearts and get along very well in a mixed flock - maybe the evil was bred out of them:D

The second set of red birds were actually crosses of production reds and RIR but they were as bad as the first RIR pair I had. I must have bad luck with Red birds period lol
 
I had one RIR, she was a horribly mean bully to the other chickens and she was the only one who'd peck me, just occasionally, but enuf to draw blood....I don't plan on ever getting another.
My current top hen is a barred rock, and she's kind and fair to everyone.

Well, I'm hoping the NH really do have that steady "personality" I like. I'm looking into ordering some hatching eggs from a breeder along with (of course) Barred Rocks. I've talked to a few people that have this line and they love them. I still have some research to do though.
