A whole chicken don't cost but 2-3$ these days @ the grocer
I slaughter old hens and extra cockerels every year as part of replenishing laying production.
Has nothing to do with the cost of grocery whole fryer....and actually the last one I bought was between $5-6.

You're also a northerner, complete opposite sides of the states and prices on everything. And I know, just saying ones cheaper then the other.

How's the cockerels taste? What month do you eat them at and I assume it's best for chicken tenders?

Probably cost me about $3 to grow them from chicks.
They taste great, not much meat tho...nothing compared to a grocery bird.
I slaughter cockerels at 13-16 weeks, still tender enough to grill for that crispy skinned goodness-grilled bones make great stock and before they start trouble trying to mount then girls. Old hens are taken, and stewed only, in fall after pullets start laying and before winter hits hard.
