POLL: Legal Limits

For my area I needed a special permit, but was allowed to set my own limit. I set 12, no restrictions on roos, so I'll keep two. I'm really the only person out here with "livestock". Sad really as this was all farm land 30 years ago.

No ordinances on animals here. Historically farming community. As long as there are no noise issues, believe outside of 8 am to 10 pm is enforced rule.

With a large family unit of six we require five hens to supply us eggs and have one rooster. We let them out at 8 am.

Oh and as far as the questions...hmm well I dont know about numbers, Im outside the city limits on acreage, so as many as I want to take care of, I know it will never be as many as my nearest neighbor who collects everything! But I believe the city nearest me allows 20 hens.

My spouse is amused by the horses, goats, chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, geese, etc. because the kids and I take good care of them. I assume he thinks Im crazy, but then so is he so its all good!

I have currently, before the next hatching storm....25 or so silkies, including a few roos, 20 something laying hens and 2 roos for them. My son has 12 ducks and 2 geese.

My city limit is 4 no roosters.

My husbands idea to get chickens but I'm the one who fell in love and needs chicken CA.

I started with 8, and now I have 12 with another 22 in the incubator...I'm not going to keep them all just about another 6-8. The rest I will give away.

I do have a rooster that I hatched and i'm gonna try and keep him. My neighbors are cool and if they end up having issues with him they will tell me first. Then I will re-home him.

Carson City just changed it's laws to allow people within the city limits to have up to 4 hens and no Roos. We live on an acre so there law does not apply to us. We can have up to 6.2 animal units. Such a weird way of determining things. An animal unit is defined as 1 unit is a horse, cow, llama, pig or other large animal. sheep, goats, alpaca and other medium sized livestock are considered 1/2 a unit. Rabbits, chickens, ducks, and smaller animals are considered 1/5 unit. So based on my lot size I can have 31 chickens.

My wife thinks I am nuts and I proved it when I told her I was going to Benson's feed store to buy a dozen chicks and came home with a receipt for 25 of them. Hey it was the minimum order and who am I to say no to that.

As of now I don't think I will be getting any more than this, but who knows.

No more than 12 with permit and no roos. I have a roo and no permit, six chickens total.

My husband thought I was out of my mind before the chickens. LOL.

Of course I want more, six will do fine for now. Once spring comes all bets are off. LOL.
