I'm setting up my first coop and debating back and forth about whether to use a traditional waterer or set up something with nipples. I have four chickens and live in the Pacific Northwest. My primary concern would be problems with birds not getting enough from nipples, or maintenance issues.

So for those of you who have tried both, which do you prefer or suggest for my situation?

Thanks!

I just switched my flock of 4 (18 week olds) over to nipples. They picked it up relatively fast and the zero mess/maintenance issue is SWEEEET.

I live in the PNW as well, and I love my nipple waterers! My DH showed my hens how they worked, and within 5 minutes all 12 had it figured out. Beats the heck out of the gavanized waterer.

I make them use nipple waterers right out of the egg. I only add supplemental water pans if it's really hot, cause everyone needs to gulp a little extra then.. I LOVE em!

I have one nipple for 4 9wk old pullets. Started them @ 5 wks. LOVE it. No mess Don't have to worry about running out of water.Clean weekly just for sanitation safety. No more poop in water. No spilled water everywhere. They are very polite and take turns. I paid $15 for an Avian Aqua water Miser but u can get them cheaperfrom one of our members. Found out too late.

I wish I had used them from the beginning, but my girls were probably four months old by the time I got them installed. I definitely would make a nipple waterer for any chicks I get in the future.
