I think we had that, we found it in Wisconsin, in a store called Meijer

That's not real cheese. That is processed something-or-other protending to be cheese. I used to like it as a kid, but then I grew up.
We have it in Canada too, it's just not called "American". It's called Kraft Slices.

I don't think the two are actually that different. Its all just cheddar mixed with other ingredients to change the texture.
