Well, your rules say short or long socks, and the first option is NO socks, so what are we supposed to do? And now you want to know about sucks! I don't have tennis shoes or skirts, so I guess I'm useless anyway. What I can tell you, is that with shorts, I wear shin-ish high socks with work boots, usually pushed down to the top of the boot because fashion, and no socks with sandals, flip flops, and running shoes. It should be a felony to wear socks with flip flops and sandals. FYI, I consider toe splitters and non toe splitters to both be flip flops.

...and how could I forget rubber boots! Shin-ish high pulled up nice and tight baby!

Seriously, I would recommend ankle socks. Your friend will get the benefit of the foot protection of the socks, without the shoe eating the socks and they really don't show that much. If you think your friend would rather something that shows less, let them roll the top down. If the shoe eats the sock it will do no good as far as protecting the feet, which is really what socks are for.

My friend thinks their current sock choice is fine. I'm the one that has a problem with it.
