13? My dad worked for a water company at the time, so he'd drive and I'd hop off and on the tailgate to read meters (which involved climbing through bushes and under trees, it was easier for me) then old ladies started complaining that a kid was reading their meter so Dad taught me to drive so he could read that stretch of the route. First thing I learned was reverse and three point turns, very useful for out mountainous area.

Our driving age was 16, so that's when I got my permit and went out with mom. It didn't last long, though. I had a much thinner skin back then, and the impatient drivers stuck behind me pretty much made me cry with their honking and salutes, so I gave up.

I didn't try again until I was 30. I went to a driving school for that (mom declined to teach me), and learned with no problem.

These days, I never tailgate or otherwise bother any car with a "student driver" tag.

sounds like you do. i lived in NYC for a long time and found cyclists just as irritating there as i do now that i live in a more rural suburb.

i can’t argue that bikes aren’t better from a health or pollution standpoint, though. they definitely are, so i can see the appeal.

like you said, we just don’t have the infrastructure so people on bikes end up being in the way more than anything.
I ride my bike. No one around here complains because they're too nice. I guess New Yorkers are just rude :)
