To Cage Or Not to Cage....
Just wondering how many people let their babys run free with their mamas unpenned at night. And How many keep their babys in cages>?

I take them away from the Hen.

We kept our chicks and mamas in a pen separate from the other chickens. The mamas would come out for awhile, but would always go back in to take care of the chicks. The mama's finally came out for good at about 5-6 weeks after the hatch. The chicks are still in the pen until they get big enough to defend themselves.

When our hens go broody we put them in a different room. they have their own food and water and they stay alone with the chicks until the chicks learn to listen to their mommy's every command. then we let them out with the others slowly.

I currently have 8 babies running around with their moms outside in the backyard - with all the other chickens and ducks!

Mine were in a crate with the mom inside the chicken pen until they were 2 weeks old. Since 2 weeks old they have been running in the large enclosure with the mom and dad.

I havee done both, but lately all the chicks with their moms get killed by my other birds.
