Pomeranian Pair's First Egg

thanks for the info 1Mrs. i have a blue sweedish hen that lays me an egg a day like clock work and she also does not put up with nionsence she breaks up the roosters from fighting and bickering , even the game roosters like as if she was the police . but yet she is very sweet doesn't like to be picked up but will allow me to "pet" her every once and a while.

Ahh....she sounds adorable. My black Swedish hen only reluctantly lets me pick her up and definitely tries to stay out of the way of rooster squabbles....and my runners, well they tolerate me at best.

I am really hoping any goslings and new ducklings I get will be friendlier. If not, well that's okay too just as long as nobody is mean.

Congratulations on the arrival of your first egg, has she laid anymore? It all looks very promising for the arrival of some goslings next year

Additionally you've got your Toulouse to look forward too

Thanks Pete for both the reply and the SUPER hatching guide you put together...I have it as a short-cut on my desktop.

Yep, I am getting an egg every other day since the first: I have three so far and each is a bit larger than the one before it. I hear the ganders "mating honk" (very distinct vocalization I first noticed after I saw them mate) daily, so am hopeful about fertility.

I picked up a still air incubator to use as a hatcher this week. I am moving the LF Dark Cornish eggs out of the incubator Tuesday night and putting the goose eggs in along with some eggs from my runner ducks: Fingers are crossed. If she continues her pattern, I will have 4 to try incubating for the first round. If they look like they are developing after I candle, I may put a few more in....since I can now do staggered hatches (use a Brinsea Octagon 20 advanced with auto turn cradle...which is why I got the Little Giant styrofoam one).

I am stoked about the Toulouse: I just hope both the goslings are healthy and survive! My daughter found an amazing video on YouTube of a Toulouse "marching band" and that is what convinced my hubby we needed a set! If I manage to hatch some Pomeranian goslings I am going to have a terrible time convincing my husband we need Pilgrim geese as well though.

It is going to be a busy spring around here; we are also getting two dozen Beltsville Small White turkey eggs to hatch late February or early March (one dozen from sandspoultry that posts on the forum and one dozen the breeder with the only other registered flock in the U.S.).

My geese have acquired a new friend over the past week. This great Egret comes and hangs out with them all day long. I can go fairly close to the pond now without it leaving. Some people down here dislike them since they eat the fish from their ponds, but we like him.

It isn't really the quality of the photo that is the point, but rather the idea so the photo isn't anything special. When our ducks were large enough to be outside, but too small to be safe outside a fenced yard we had a kiddie pool set up in "Camp Duck". The Rouens could get in and out of the smaller pool we started with using some brick steps I made inside and outside the pool when they were small: When they got bigger they simply bailed over the side.

However, once I hatched out our Runner ducks, we needed to move the Rouens to a larger pool (made a mess of the small one too quickly) and let the new babies have the smaller pool. The new pool had 18" sides which were impossible for the ducks to get over. So, we had all these large pine boards recovered from a remodel done at a World Market store and used them to build a simple "duck ramp".

We started with this large pine platform looking box for a deck and attached two ramps: One long one to the ground and one shorter one into the pool. We placed a concrete block inside the pool and rested the short side of the ramp on it (piece of trex is what is actually resting on the block and in the water). My husband was worried about them slipping over the edge so he even installed side rails. We kept this pool as our hospital/juvenile area and the ramp works great... our geese even use it occasionally.

Here is the picture.....

Lovely picture and very cute

Sounds like your Pomeranians are in breeding condition and you may well have some fertile eggs to incubate. Best of luck with them and just a tip that goose eggs do better at a slightly lower temperature than chickens and ducks.

You certainly are heading for an exciting New Year

I like that idea of a deck, now all they need is a few lounge chairs and they'd have it made. can't wait to hear about your goose eggs.. so eggciting!!
