I would like to design a mini pond like this for my chickens and ducks. Is this a good idea? Any tips?

My husband wanted to do this too but I was afraid the pond would get too nasty with the ducks and it would be hard to change the water out. Anyone have experience building a pond like this for ducks?

Yes, the pond will get pretty dirty, however you can use a hose and a downhill slope in order to create a syphin to get rid of the water and refill it for cleaning. It's not difficult but takes a little bit of time.

I think you are correct. Best idea I've seen to keep a pond clean so far comes from this thread...

It will require pumps and such, scaled to your need. Other than that the most practical I've seen has been a small kiddie pool with a good drain and hoses going to you garden.

Good luck, I'm contemplating duck ponds myself but haven't committed. That's ANOTHER project!

Building an efficient filter, that is easily maintained, for a duck pond would be a major undertaking.

I studied koi pond filtration for a few years, built a miniature one.
Learned a lot about what not to do.
Biggest thing, get the poop out of the water column asap.

For ducks, best bet is a large and well placed drain to totally change out water, or a smaller vessel easily dumped to let them swim once in awhile.

All the research I've done leads me to going with the kiddie pool drained often, as you suggest.

Always thankful for your suggestions! :highfive:

Do you suggest a certain filter? I want the best
